Embracing the Learning Disposition Mindset
Years ago, I encountered a universal personal challenge that spans across generations—identifying, understanding, and rectifying mistakes. This challenge, coupled with the undeniable truth that we can never know everything, sets us on a perpetual journey to learn and thereby reduce errors.
Introducing the Learning Disposition Mindset (LDM)
Newton’s law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In response to our ongoing learning challenge, we need a force to counterbalance this effect. Initially, I referred to this counterforce as the "Learner’s Disposition," but it has since evolved into what I now call the "Learning Disposition."
At its core, the Learning Disposition encompasses a mindset—a combination of habits, thoughts, and beliefs—that equips us to continuously learn and address our knowledge gaps and the mistakes that inevitably arise.
Defining the Learning Disposition Mindset (LDM)
The Learning Disposition Mindset (LDM) prepares us to learn, relearn, and unlearn as necessary, utilizing whichever methods are required. It’s about adapting our approach to learning to ensure it’s as flexible and effective as possible.
Perspective in Learning
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, 'perspective' is defined as:
- A view or vista.
- A mental view or outlook.
- An understanding of how aspects of a subject relate to each other and to the whole.
- Subjective evaluation of relative significance; a point of view.
- The ability to perceive things in their actual interrelations or comparative importance.
In the context of learning, the concept of 'perspective' must be versatile. The way we perceive learning can vary dramatically depending on our mood, experiences, thoughts, situations, and more.
The Learning Process
Learning involves acquiring knowledge or information to expand our understanding of what we do not know. Relearning and unlearning, on the other hand, focus on improving or correcting what we already know.
A Balanced Perspective
The LDM advocates for a balanced perspective, one that allows us to learn from past successes and failures, engaging and dull instructors, personal strengths and weaknesses. It emphasizes the necessity to continue learning through both good and bad days, and through both positive and negative feelings.
The Learning Story
At the heart of the Learning Disposition Mindset is the principle of learning through any necessary methods. It is only through continual, conscious learning that we can lead happy and fulfilled lives.
LDM serves as the counterbalance to the common and natural challenge of learning—we make mistakes because we don’t remember or know everything, and we never will. LDM embodies the WAY2CLIFE concept, promoting a lifestyle where learning is continuous and integral to overcoming life's challenges.
