Avery’s Story: A Lifelong Learning Journey

Welcome! I’m Avery Austin, and for over three decades I’ve been on a journey defined by one simple truth: learning changes everything. My story isn’t polished or perfect—it’s filled with trial, error, persistence, and growth. That’s exactly why I share it: because I know what it means to struggle, to start again, and to discover your calling through persistence.

Humble Beginnings

It started when a deacon at my church saw something in me that I didn’t yet see in myself. With his encouragement, I applied to five colleges just three weeks into my senior year of high school. Only one accepted me. I enrolled as an engineering student and soon found myself leaning heavily on the campus learning center to survive Physics, Chemistry, and Calculus. Those early tutoring sessions weren’t just about passing courses—they planted the seed for my lifelong passion for learning and for helping others push through difficult subjects.

The Power of Resilience

As the first in my family to attend college, I was labeled “at-risk.” But instead of giving up, that label fueled my determination. Ironically, it was in the same learning center where I sought help that my hidden strength was revealed: teaching. The staff recognized my ability to explain Math and Physics to others and offered me a tutoring position. That moment opened my eyes to a path I hadn’t considered before—helping others learn.

Over time, I earned both my BS and MS degrees in Physics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Alongside my studies, I continued tutoring and teaching STEM courses to support myself and sharpen my ability to connect with students from different backgrounds.

From Industry to Education

After graduation, I entered the technical world, working as a physicist, analyst, and engineer for government contractors, including the Department of Energy. My technical presentation skills earned me offers to train others full-time, but at the time, I wasn’t ready to say yes. Looking back, I realize I was running from the very calling that had followed me since college.

Eventually, the pull became too strong to ignore. In 2006, while attending a tutor certification conference, I had an epiphany: this was the work I was meant to do. Over the next several years, I leaned fully into training, mentoring, and coaching—accumulating thousands of hours guiding tutors, faculty, and administrators across the country, from high schools to community colleges and universities.

Embracing the Call

Through the Pathway2C Learning Center, I now dedicate myself to cultivating what I call a Learning Disposition Mindset™—a commitment to learning, relearning, and unlearning as a lifelong practice. My work today bridges two brands:

  • TrueLens Coaching – helping individuals sharpen their perspectives, align with truth, and make learning-centered decisions in life; powered by WAY2CLIFE concepts.
  • Way2CSTEM – preparing colleges, universities, and school systems with professional development that helps educators and students overcome learning barriers and thrive in STEM.

Both initiatives reflect my lived belief that learning is second only to breathing in importance.

Lessons That Shape My Work

My experience in Physics taught me that even the most complex problems can be broken down into smaller, manageable parts. That lesson has guided me through every phase of life—whether in the lab, the classroom, or leadership roles.

  • Persistence matters. Setbacks aren’t signs to stop; they’re signals to adjust.
  • Support matters. No one succeeds alone. I succeeded because others gave me a chance, and now I pay that forward.
  • Perspective matters. Through TrueLens Coaching, I help others see beyond blind spots to recognize growth opportunities.

What’s Next?

I remain a student of life—still learning, still refining, and still paying forward what others once invested in me. My vision is to continue expanding the reach of Way2CSTEM, equipping educators and institutions with tools that make math and science accessible, practical, and confidence-building for all learners.

If there’s one thing my story proves, it’s this: you don’t have to start out confident to end up impactful. You just have to stay willing to learn, persist, and lean into the opportunities placed in front of you.
